Bodhi Tree, L.A.'s Landmark Independent Bookstore

In celebration of Independence Day, I spotlight Bodhi Tree Bookstore (www.bodhitree.com)--one of the country's dying breed of independent bookstores. Although the breed may be near extinction, this bookstore has never been more alive. Opened in 1970 on West Hollywood's famed Melrose Avenue, Bodhi Tree retains its original location as well as its commitment to its spiritual roots. Readers will find a thought-provoking and mind-altering plethora of metaphysical, spiritual, and New Age titles that heralded the store's humble beginnings and to which it has remained true to its roots. The popular shop also stocks audio books and videotapes and assorted gift items that pertain to the metaphysical theme. Newer additions to this hang-out-and-browse shop include a used-book branch and an annex that hosts various events and workshops. An example of the lectures offered includes a four-week Sunday lecture series (July 6, 13, 20.27), presented by Kadampa Meditation Center with classes from the Geshe Kelsang Gyatso book "How to Solve Our Human Problems." Other July presentations are Zhaxi Zhuoma Rinpoche's "Dorje Chang Buddha Comes To America," and Kelly Morgan's "The Artist's Way Workshop." Some events are free, others are by donation, and some exact a fairly hefty fee--something for everyone. Most days, Bodhi Tree provides psychic readings on the patio. Choose your favorite: tarot, astrology, animal divination, palmistry, numerology, and other disciplines (charges apply).
