Food and Wine Rates Tokyo #1
Hot on the heels of Michelin Guides bestowing 191 stars to 150 restaurants in Tokyo, ranking the city above Paris for gourmands, Food and Wine has also ranked Tokyo above Paris and New York City in its listing of 10 Best Restaurant Cities.
Here are just some of the restaurants on the list:
Gourmet Yakitori at Birdland - "Yaki" means "to grill"; "tori" is chicken - combine the two in trendy Ginza and you get Birdland. For chef Wada the quality of the food is paramount. He uses free-range Oku-Kuji shamo (gamecocks), reared in the mountains of Iwate prefecture. Set meals start at 6,000 Yen.
Omotenashi BAR at Isetan - Located in the recently renovated Isetan department store's depachika (basement food-floor), Omotenashi BAR, serves nihonshu (the Japanese word for what Americans call sake) paired with small plates. The menu changes frequently and showcases dishes inspired by renowned Japanese restaurants. (map)
Tempura Mikawa - The bests tempura in Tokyo prepared in classic Edomae style, which, during the Edo era (1603-1867), referred to the practice of using only seafood found in Tokyo Bay and vegetables grown locally. (Roppongi Hills Location)
Nodaiwa - Located in a 200 year old house in Higashi Azabu, this fifth-generation unagi shop sources the highest-quality varieties of eel available in Japan and serves it steamed, grilled, dipped in sweet soy-based sauce and accompanied by rice and pickles.
