It's not just Cricket!
It opened in 1852 and is currently 156 not out.
I am, of course, referring to one of Singapore's grandest institutions - the Singapore Cricket Club.
Located on the eastern side of The Padang - a large recreational field in central Singapore - with the Swissoted Stamford on one side and the Singapore River and the beginnings of the Shenton Way commercial district on the other, the Cricket Club has stood in imposing glory for over a century and a half
Less than two decades after Sir Stanford Raffles arrived in 1819 and opened up Singapore as a trading port, teams were playing cricket on The Padang. And they're still at it!
The present Clubhouse was built in 1884 - the third - and remains structurally the same to this day. The Northern and Southern wings were added in 1922 ...everything else is the same except for some cosmetic work a couple of years ago.
International cricket teams regularly stop-off en-route to distant tournaments and play matches against local teams on this hallowed turf.
It's not just cricket that is played on the green outfield of the Singapore Cricket Club. Football and Rugby Sevens tournaments take place regularly, each attracting large international participation.
Lawn bowls tournaments have also been played here since 1898 involving Inter-Club as well as visiting teams. Other sports sections within the Club include Balut - Billards - Darts - Golf - Hockey - Netball - Squash and Tennis
Membership today is close to the 3500 mark. Members must be over 21, resident in Singapore - and pay an Ordinary Membership Fee of SIN$50,000. Sports Memberships come it at just over SIN$1000.
Located a six-hit away from imposing building from Singapore's Colonial past... the Singapore Cricket Club remains an impressive icon of yesteryear.
Make sure you see it when in town.
