Love, Locks, and a Bridge

They all say you'll either fall in love in Verona (duh!) or in Venice, but I say there's no better place to fall in love than in Rome. There's a place in Rome where lovers meet and break, a place where hearts collide, entertwine and divide, a place where the memory of a love story will remain forever. There lies a bridge, Ponte Milvio, which for the last decade has played hero and villain for Rome's lovers and is now a sight to behold.

It all started a few years ago, when a young couple decided to show their love to the whole world by placing a golden lock around a lampost on the bridge. They wrote their names on the lock and ran into the sunset. As days went by, the amount of locks grew, intricately stuck to each other until the iron lampost  couldn't take it anymore. Then one day, it broke in half.

It was restored immediately by the City of Rome (really!) but the locks were soon stolen by gypsies. In less than hour, they were found and placed in their original position.

With time, this custom grew so strong that the original lampost was removed, and iron chains were placed along the bridge. In less than a year, all the chains were riddled with gold and silver locks until rain and rust do them apart.
